SwimSafer Stage 5 is the Silver stage. It advances stroke efficiency, distance, diving fundamentals, personal survival, and prescribed assessment sequences. Where Bronze introduces survival thinking, Silver asks swimmers to combine it with better technique over longer efforts, and to perform several skills one after another without a break to reset. It rewards swimmers who are steady and well-paced rather than just fast.
Who Silver Suits
Silver suits swimmers who are comfortable in deep water, can swim continuously with good form in more than one stroke, and have already practised basic survival skills. Many Silver candidates are older primary-school children or teenagers who swim regularly and want to push their competence further, sometimes as a step toward more advanced lifesaving or aquatic activities.
The Kinds of Skills Silver Builds
Current requirements include multiple stroke, survival, entry, underwater, rescue, and knowledge elements. Some components must be performed in a prescribed sequence. In practical terms, preparation often concentrates on:
- Holding efficient technique across longer swims, including in more than one stroke
- Safe, controlled head-first entry fundamentals, practised only in suitable water depth and under supervision
- Moving smoothly from one skill to the next within a continuous sequence
- More developed survival and assistance skills
- Applying water-safety knowledge to realistic situations

How to Tell if Your Swimmer Is Ready
Good indicators include: swimming continuously at an easy pace without technique falling apart, staying composed in deep water for an extended period, and being able to follow multi-step instructions in the water. If a swimmer can do every skill individually but loses form when they are combined, sequence practice is the next priority, not more distance.
How Lessons Prepare for Silver
Silver preparation tends to look more like a training session than a beginner lesson. A coach may use technique drills early, then progressively longer sets, then rehearsal of skill sequences under gentle fatigue. Diving fundamentals are taught step by step from low, safe positions. Good coaches also teach pacing, so the swimmer finishes a sequence with energy to spare rather than going out too fast.
Common Sticking Points and Practice Tips
- Pacing: starting too hard is the most common reason sequences fall apart. Practise a pace you could hold for twice as long.
- Transitions: time is lost and energy wasted between skills. Rehearse the change from one skill to the next, not just the skills themselves.
- Head-first entries: nerves cause bent knees or a lifted head. Progress gradually with a coach; never practise in shallow water.
- Secondary stroke weakness: many swimmers have one strong stroke and one weak one. Give the weaker stroke short, regular attention.
Before and After Silver
Silver follows SwimSafer Stage 4 Bronze and leads to SwimSafer Stage 6 Gold, the programme’s most advanced level. See the SwimSafer 指南 for the full progression.

Silver FAQs
What is the biggest difference between Bronze and Silver?
Silver asks for more efficiency over longer efforts and introduces diving fundamentals, and some elements are performed as a sequence. Composure under mild fatigue becomes more important.
Is diving safe for my child to practise?
Only with a qualified coach, in water of suitable depth, and following pool rules. Many pools restrict diving in certain areas. Never practise head-first entries in shallow water.
How much should my swimmer train between lessons?
Regular, moderate swims focused on technique and steady pace are more useful than occasional hard sessions. Ask the coach for a short practice plan.
My child failed one part of the assessment. What now?
Ask for the specific feedback, focus practice on that element, and confirm the current re-assessment process through the official channel or your instructor.
