Two pieces of equipment matter most in a beginner’s first year: goggles that seal and stay sealed, and a kickboard that suits the swimmer’s size. Much else is optional. Many beginners put up with leaky goggles or an oversized float and assume the discomfort is normal. It usually isn’t.
Common Beginner Equipment
| 常见装备 | Purpose | Fit check | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goggles | Protect eyes; let you see underwater | Cups hold briefly by suction without the strap | Choosing by price or style before checking fit |
| Kickboard | Support the upper body while practising kick | Swimmer can hold the top comfortably | Oversized boards for small children |
| 夹腿浮板 | Support the hips while practising arms | Held between the thighs without much squeezing | Relying on it instead of learning body position |
| Foam noodle | Support and balance for young beginners | Stable without needing a strong grip | Treating it as a safety device |
Choosing Goggles
Try the seal test: press the cups against your eyes without pulling the strap over your head. If they stay in place briefly by suction, they suit your face shape. If they drop straight away, they are likely to leak.
Face shapes vary, so try several styles; some brands offer models designed for a lower nose bridge or narrower face.
- Clear lenses suit indoor pools and evening sessions.
- Tinted or smoke lenses help with glare at outdoor pools.
- Mirrored lenses reduce glare in bright sun.
- Prescription lenses are available from some suppliers if you need glasses for daily vision.
Buy children’s goggles in children’s sizes. Adult goggles usually won’t seal on a child’s face. Try them in store if possible, or buy somewhere with a clear return policy.
Choosing a Kickboard
A kickboard is a drill tool, not something to use for a whole session. It supports the upper body so you can focus on your kick. Over-reliance can stop you learning the body position you need for swimming unaided.
- Young children: a junior board or noodle. Large boards can push a small child’s chest too high.
- Older children and teens: a junior or mid-size board they can hold comfortably.
- Adults: a standard board is usually fine.
For lessons, check whether the coach provides boards before buying one.
Where to Buy
Sports shops and specialist swim shops stock beginner goggles and kickboards. For your first pair of goggles, buying in store lets you try the fit; online can be cheaper once you know what fits.
常见误区
- Buying goggles for looks. Fit matters more than colour or style.
- Over-tightening the strap to stop leaks. This can cause discomfort or headaches and rarely fixes a poor fit. Try a different model.
- Using oversized kickboards with children.
- Using a kickboard for whole sessions instead of short drill sets.
- Putting up with fogging. Anti-fog coating wears off. An anti-fog spray helps, and avoid wiping the inside of the lens, which can remove the coating.
安全注意事项
Goggles, kickboards and noodles are not safety equipment. A child holding a float still needs an adult within arm’s reach at all times.
Each swimmer should use their own goggles. For jumps and dives, follow the coach’s instructions on goggles, since a poorly fitted pair can be knocked out of place on entry.

常见问题
How often should I replace goggles?
When they leak, fog badly despite anti-fog spray, or the strap loses elasticity. Rinsing them in fresh water and storing them out of direct sun helps them last.
Can my child use a kickboard without an adult watching?
No. A kickboard does not prevent drowning. Children need arm’s-reach supervision regardless of equipment.
Why do my goggles fog?
The factory anti-fog coating wears off with use. Rinse after swimming and use an anti-fog spray.
Kickboard or pull buoy: what’s the difference?
A kickboard supports the upper body while the legs kick. A pull buoy sits between the thighs to support the hips while the arms work.
Is an expensive kickboard better?
Not for beginners. Size matters more than brand. Spend more on goggles that fit.
My child keeps taking their goggles off. Why?
Often the fit is wrong or the strap is too tight. Check the seal and loosen the strap slightly.
