For a child’s first swimming lessons, buy a plain, close-fitting one-piece in polyester or PBT, sized to be slightly snug, with wide straps and no ties, frills or skirts. Fashion swimwear — Lia Swimwear or any resort label — is designed for a beach holiday, and in a lesson it rides up, comes undone, and turns thirty minutes of teaching into thirty minutes of adjusting. Cost is not the issue. Cut is.
I can tell within one length which children are going to spend the lesson tugging at something. It is always the suit, and it is never the child’s fault.
What actually matters
| Feature | Why it matters in a lesson | Choose |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Chlorine destroys elastane within months | Polyester or PBT on the label |
| Fit | Suits stretch when wet | Slightly snug when dry |
| Straps | Thin straps slip; ties come undone | Wide, sewn, racer or cross-back |
| Skirts and frills | Drag, and they billow over the face | 一般泳道训练通常没有对抗接触 |
| Two-piece | Rides up on every stroke | One-piece for lessons |
| Sun protection | Outdoor pools, Singapore sun | Fitted rash guard, UPF rated |
The skirt row surprises parents. A swim skirt in water is a parachute. It slows a child down, it wraps around their legs, and when they float on their back it floats up over their chin. It looks charming on the hanger.
Buying it
- Read the composition label. Polyester or PBT if the child swims weekly. Nylon-elastane feels softer and sags by term three.
- Buy snug, not roomy. Children grow, but a loose suit in water is worse than a short-lived one.
- Pull the straps. They should not stretch far, and there should be no knots or bows anywhere.
- Get them to raise both arms and bend over. In the shop. It takes five seconds and prevents a term of fidgeting.
- Add goggles that fit. Press them to the face without the strap; they should hold for a moment. Water in the eyes ends more lessons than fear does.
- Buy two and rinse in cold water immediately after each swim. No wringing, no machine, no drying in direct sun.
Coverage is a preference, not a compromise
Some children are more comfortable covered. Long-sleeved suits, leg suits, swim dresses and rash guards all exist in proper swimming fabrics, and none of them slow a child down in any way that matters. A child who feels comfortable will get in the water. That is the only variable that counts.
If modesty matters for your family, look for a fitted, sewn-down design rather than a loose one — loose garments are the problem, not covered ones. Our notes on modest swimwear you can genuinely swim in are at swimmingcoach.sg.
安全注意事项
Loose clothing in water is genuinely dangerous. A baggy T-shirt worn for coverage billows, drags heavily, and can wrap around the arms. If a child wants to be covered, use a fitted rash guard, never an oversized shirt.
A swimsuit is not a flotation device. Neither are armbands, rings or noodles — those are teaching aids at best, and a child wearing them still needs an adult within arm’s reach. Children have drowned wearing armbands.
No breath-holding games in lessons or at the pool afterwards. Prolonged breath-holding can cause shallow-water blackout: a silent loss of consciousness underwater, with no struggle and no warning. Children pick this game up from older siblings. Explain why, once, plainly.
Drowning is silent. Whatever your child is wearing, watch them, not the water.
常见误区
- Buying a size up “to grow into”. A loose suit in water fills, drags and rides up.
- Bikinis for lessons. The child will spend the class adjusting rather than listening.
- Anything with a bow or a tie. It will come undone off the wall, in front of everyone.
- Skirts and frills. Charming, and they behave like a sea anchor.
- Ignoring the goggles. Leaking goggles derail more lessons than anything else.
- Leaving the wet suit in the bag. Chlorine keeps working. Rinse it.
常见问题
Is Lia Swimwear suitable for swimming lessons?
Fashion and resort swimwear is generally cut for the beach. For lessons, choose a plain, close-fitting one-piece in a chlorine-resistant fabric. Check the composition label rather than the brand.
What swimsuit fabric lasts longest?
Polyester and PBT. Nylon-elastane blends feel nicer at first and degrade far faster in chlorine.
Should my child wear a rash guard?
For outdoor pools, yes. It handles sun protection and coverage at once, and it does not slow them down.
Do children need a swim cap?
Not for safety. It keeps long hair out of the eyes and out of the filter, and many pools require one.
How often should I replace a child’s swimsuit?
When it stops fitting, or when the fabric goes transparent when stretched. Rinsed and rotated, a chlorine-resistant suit lasts about a year.
Where do I book lessons?
swimmingclasses.sg covers group formats and privateswimming.sg covers one-to-one, which suits a frightened child better. Find a pool at swimmingnearme.sg, or see ActiveSG for public programmes.
Plain, snug, one-piece, no ties. Spend the money you saved on goggles that actually fit, and the first lesson will be about swimming.
