Swim stroke correction - coach analysing a swimmer's technique in a pool

By the Singapore Swimming Lessons team at Swim2u Swim School · Last reviewed: 30 September 2026 · Editorial policy

Stroke correction means identifying the specific technique faults holding a swimmer back and retraining the movement, one fault at a time. For swimmers who have plateaued, fixing a key habit, such as a dropped elbow or a wide breaststroke kick, can make a bigger difference to efficiency than simply swimming more.

为什么很难自己判断泳姿问题

Swimming happens largely out of your line of sight, so it is hard to know what your body is actually doing versus what it feels like it is doing. A stroke that feels smooth can still be inefficient. That is why stroke correction usually needs outside feedback, from a coach watching from the side or from video, rather than self-assessment alone.

Common Errors by Stroke

泳姿或活动 Common Error Likely Cause Example Corrective Drill
自由泳 Crossing the centreline on entry Hand enters in front of the head instead of in line with the shoulder One-arm freestyle focusing on hand entry
自由泳 Dropped elbow on the pull Pulling with a straight arm and losing the “paddle” Sculling and catch-up drills to build a high-elbow feel
自由泳 Kicking from the knee The knee drives the kick instead of the hip Kickboard sets with a hip-led cue
蛙泳 Wide or late kick Knees drifting too far apart Narrow-kick drills, kicking on the back or with a board
蛙泳 Skipping the glide Starting the next stroke before the streamlined stretch Hold the stretch for a count of two before the next pull
仰泳 Sitting low in the water Head lifted; hips dropping Head-still kicking drills

常见自由泳技术问题

Crossing the Centreline

When the hand enters past the middle of the body instead of in line with the shoulder, it creates a zig-zag that wastes energy. Aim to enter the hand in front of the shoulder, fingertips first.

划水时手肘位置过低

A straight-arm pull is usually less effective than a high-elbow catch, where the forearm and hand work together like a paddle. Sculling drills help build the feel for this position.

Too Much or Too Little Rotation

Too little body rotation limits reach; too much disrupts balance and breathing. A moderate rotation led from the hips and core, not just the shoulders, tends to work best.

主要从膝盖而不是髋部踢腿

A kick driven mainly by bending the knee creates drag without much propulsion. A more efficient kick starts from the hip, with a long leg and a slight, natural knee bend.

常见蛙泳技术问题

  • 抬头过高或过早, which disrupts body position and slows the glide
  • 踢腿过宽或时机太晚, which reduces propulsion and adds drag (see the safety note below about knees)
  • Skipping the glide, rushing into the next stroke without a brief streamlined stretch

常见仰泳技术问题

  • 身体在水中过低, often from lifting the head
  • 回臂过度弯曲或紧张; the recovering arm should stay fairly straight and relaxed, entering little finger first roughly in line with the shoulder
  • Uneven kick rhythm, which disrupts balance and rotation

How Stroke Correction Sessions Usually Work

  1. The coach watches several lengths and picks the one or two most important issues, rather than trying to fix everything at once.
  2. Drills isolate the problem movement so the swimmer can focus on one change.
  3. The swimmer practises slowly first, prioritising accuracy over speed.
  4. The corrected movement is gradually built back into full swimming until it feels natural.

Retraining a movement the body has repeated for months or years takes deliberate practice, so corrections rarely stick overnight.

Safety During Stroke Correction

  • Shoulder pain. Some freestyle drills load the shoulder more than easy swimming. Stop if you feel sharp or pinching pain and tell your coach. Mention any past shoulder injury before starting.
  • Knee pain in breaststroke. The breaststroke kick can strain the inside of the knee, especially with a very wide kick. If your knee hurts, stop and tell the instructor; a modified kick may be safer.
  • Breath-holding. Underwater drills should be short and supervised. Never practise repeated or prolonged breath-holding alone, and never hyperventilate before going underwater; this can cause a sudden blackout even in strong swimmers.
  • Children. Children must be supervised by a qualified instructor during in-water work and by an adult around the pool at all times.
  • Health conditions. If you have an injury or medical condition, check with a doctor or physiotherapist before starting technique work.

为什么一次集中纠正一个重点

Trying to correct several things at once usually overwhelms the swimmer. It tends to work better to prioritise the change with the biggest effect, let it become automatic, and then move on to the next.

The Value of Video

Seeing your own stroke on video can be eye-opening, because how a stroke feels and how it looks are often different. If you want video feedback, ask your coach whether it is possible at your pool, since some pools restrict filming.

If you have plateaued, 成人游泳课程 或 私人课程 focused on technique can help identify where your stroke is breaking down. For children, 儿童游泳课程 give a coach the chance to correct habits before they become ingrained.

Feeling Worse Before Better

It is common to feel slower or less coordinated right after a correction, because the body is unlearning an old pattern. This dip is normal and usually passes with continued focused practice.

Equipment That Can Help

Fins, pull buoys and kickboards can isolate parts of the stroke. A pull buoy supports the legs so you can focus on arms and rotation; fins can help you feel a longer, hip-led kick; a kickboard isolates the legs. Use them as your coach suggests rather than all the time.

常见问题

怎样判断自己是否需要泳姿纠正?

Signs include a plateau despite regular swimming, recurring shoulder or neck discomfort, or feeling that you work very hard for little speed.

How long does stroke correction take?

It depends on the issue, but most corrections need several weeks of focused practice before they feel automatic.

可以只看网上视频自己纠正泳姿吗?

You can learn the general ideas, but because you cannot see yourself swim, self-correction is limited. Feedback from a coach, or video of your own swimming, helps a lot.

泳姿纠正只适合竞技游泳者吗?

No. Recreational swimmers benefit too, since better technique usually means less fatigue.

Why does my stroke feel worse after a correction session?

This is a normal, temporary phase while your body adjusts. It usually passes with continued practice.

Should children have their stroke corrected early?

Yes, gently. Correcting habits early is usually easier than unlearning them later.

总结

Stroke correction is less about dramatic overhauls and more about finding the one or two errors that matter most, then patiently retraining them. With good feedback and consistent practice, even long-standing habits can improve.
